Today hospital rooms are multifunctional high-tech rooms. Electricity, light and gas supply are crucial elements of every care unit. Biolume from Loos in France is the country’s leading manufacturer of hospital lighting and equipment for health care facilities. Offering tailor-made solutions, the company now aims to enhance its international market presence.

“Our plan is to establish a new branch office in Germany first,” says Export Director Olivier Hoffmann. “We see good perspectives in the German market.”

At present, the company is represented in Belgium, the Netherlands and Morocco and runs a factory in Western Asia. It also collaborates with 35 agents worldwide. Biolume’s most important export market is North Africa, followed by the Middle East, Central and Northern Europe, and finally India and Russia.

“Thanks to our customized solutions, we are the undisputed market leader in France,” says Mr. Hoffmann. “Of course, we have been affected by the economic turbulence of recent years. Many projects slowed down, and investment decisions were postponed. However, most hospital building projects are long-term oriented national or communal projects, and health care is a major issue.”

The product program of Biolume falls into the divisions Accommodation, Technical Wards, Medical Gases, Biomedical Accessories and Acrylic Technologies. “In fact, we produce aluminium trunkings for electrical and light supply, and for medical gases,” explains the export director. “All the trunkings are tailor-made to the requirements and specifications of our clients, and we only use the best materials.”

In the beginning, Biolume focused on hospital rooms exclusively. Today, the company offers equipment for all types of rooms: for therapy rooms, operating theaters, recovery rooms and others.

Although all solutions are applied in hospitals, the company never sells directly but instead to plumbers, electrical contractors or building companies. Biolume is mostly involved in new building projects. In addition to this, the company supplies renovation and restoration projects as well as expansions.

The company was founded in 1994 by its current PDG Jean-Luc Claye. Drawing on many years of experience in the market, he specialized in customized solutions from the very beginning. Soon, he took the first steps abroad.

Four years ago, he acquired the resin specialist Resinor, which focuses on bacteria-free and shock-resistant wash basins. Today, Biolume is integrated into the Biodis group.

“We are also a member of a special organization based in the Eurosante Zone near Lille,” says Mr. Hoffmann. “The goal of the association is to developed future-oriented hospital rooms. Against this background, we founded a cluster in Lille together with ten partner companies. All of them hold shares in the CliniFit organization and have complementary know-how and competencies. As a result, we are an interdisciplinary team of specialists able to create the ideal hospital room of the future, even including furniture, beds and smart solutions such as multimedia and communications. The concept of this future hospital room has already been placed in various hospitals in France and abroad.”

Altogether, Biolume has a staff of 90 in France, plus five working at the branch offices and another 25 at Resinor.

“We develop individual solutions, and our trunking systems are modular and can be changed easily without any building efforts,” Mr. Hoffmann explains the company’s success. “We use top-quality products exclusively and cooperate with only top partners for light, gas and electricity. Of course, we meet all the different national laws and regulations. Thanks to our organizational structure, we draw on a unique pool of competence and are able to meet our clients’ expectations, even extraordinary ones. We supply complete solutions instead of products.”
