If ever there was a theme for the 21st century, it is convenience. We are constantly looking for ways to make our lives easier. For instance, more and more people are doing their shopping online. Instead of calling for takeout, you can order it on a website, and now you can even book a table for your favourite restaurant without ever picking up the phone. Bookatable GmbH & Co. KG based in Hamburg offers a user interface for restaurant reservations as well as customized marketing packages for the gastronomy sector.

“We work with any restaurant that takes reservations,” says Regional Director Christina Tachezy. “Whether it is a hotel, a beer garden or that little Italian place on the corner, we offer customized packages for everyone to get optimal occupancy.”

Bookatable’s primary focus is the reservation interface, featuring the date, time and number of people in the party, for the restaurateur. The interface is connected to the restaurant’s calendar for reservations.

Restaurateurs have a variety of packages to choose from. The smallest service package, Bookatable 24, is available for free. For every paying guest, the restaurateur is charged a small fee.

“We also offer the packages Professional and Premium, which provide quite a few options, such as seating plans and marketing activities,” Ms. Tachezy explains. “Our customers can also build up their own customer database. That way the restaurateur can market himself perfectly, and we are pleased to support these activities in social media, for instance.”

While many companies sell systems, Bookatable stands out with its marketplace thinking, particularly in B2C marketing. “We see ourselves as a service provider, and the guest is the joint target group for both us and the restaurant,” Ms. Tachezy says.

That is part of the company’s success. It provides an easy-to-use system that eases the workload of restaurant owners, as well as adding convenience for guests. “We combine an understanding of both the guest and the B2B sector,” the regional director says.

One of Bookatable’s latest projects is the weekly menu, where the restaurants’ special offers are published on Bookatable. That way guests know right away about current specials in the region.

The company was founded in Hamburg in 2003 under the name, Livebookings, as a reservation system for the individual needs of the gastronomy sector. In 2008 Livebookings took over Bookatable, whose name it adopted as its corporate name this year.

Bookatable has 20 employees in Germany and 200 located internationally. Nonetheless, the company is looking for more sales staff. Ms. Tachezy is responsible for both operational activities and strategic direction. Her partner Thomas Bergmann heads the entire sales section.

In the DACH region, Bookatable has mediated 2.5 million guests, and internationally it has been 23.5 million guests. Bookatable is headquartered in London and works with restaurants in over 19 countries. The company’s main markets are the UK, Sweden and Germany. Bookatable attends fairs such as the Internorga in Hamburg, the Intergastra in Stuttgart or the Gast in Salzburg.

The company sees great potential for the future, including mobile solutions. “82% of all smartphone users look for restaurant options in their region,” Ms. Tachezy notes. “We are going to tap into this.”

Bookatable is nevertheless realistic about the competition in its industry and the intense price pressure that goes with it. “We would like to build up a strong consumer market and strengthen our brand recognition,” Ms. Tachezy describes the company’s goals. “Our offers will continue to win over restaurateurs and helps us transform from a system provider to a service provider.”
